As a material expression of society, we believe in nurturing
creative expressions and cultivating talent amongst our youth, while fostering a
greater appreciation for local art.
To a developer, architecture and
art complement each other to create a desired expression and enhance the
ambience of a property. Our long-standing support of the sculptural art form is
a natural extension of our core business as a developer.
In 2002, CDL
initiated and organised the
CDL Singapore Sculpture
Award to nurture artistic talent and to cultivate a greater appreciation
for the sculptural art form in Singapore. Held biennially, the Award also aims
to enrich Singapore’s sculptural landscape, through the commissioning and
installation of the winning sculpture for display. The Award’s Organising
Committee comprises the National Parks Board, National Heritage Board, National
Arts Council, LASALLE College of the Arts and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
Singapore Art Museum is the Venue Sponsor for the Award
Exhibition.
Apart from sculpture, photography is another art form that
CDL has been promoting amongst the youth. In 2006, CDL initiated the Singapore
Young Photographer Award in partnership with five major photo clubs, the
Singapore Art Museum and National Youth Achievement Award Council, to nurture
young local photography talents. Besides managing this national-level initiative
to promote photography amongst youths, CDL also introduced a sub-category award,
"CDL Young Architectural Photographer Award" that aims to identify and
groom
young talents specialising in architectural photography, which complements our
core
business.
To commemorate Singapore's hosting of the first ever Youth
Olympic Games (YOG), two specially-designed Olympic-themed public artworks have
been commissioned by CDL for installation at the Marina Bay waterfront promenade
before the start of the YOG in August 2010. The artworks, "Breathe" by artist
Edwin Cheong and "A World United" by artist Huang Yifan, will be the first
public art sculptures launched under the Marina Bay Public Art
Programme.
Both artists were exhibited open category finalists of the
CDL Singapore Sculpture Award, a biennial competition held since 2003, and were
amongst the 30 artists who submitted their concept proposals based on the
Olympic themes of Peace and Sport, Culture and Environment.
This
project is a collaboration between the Urban Redevelopment Authority, CDL and
Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee. For more details,

Held for the 3rd time, the biennial
Singapore Young Photographer Award
(SYPA) aims to nurture young photographic talents and elevate the
standard of photography in Singapore. This national photography competition was
initiated by CDL in 2006, in partnership with five major photo clubs and the
National Youth Achievement Award Council.
The SYPA features two
categories - Junior Category for 13 to 18 years old and Youth Category for 19 to
25 years old. Those with a creative eye for architecture and buildings can also
zoom in on the CDL Young Architectural Photographer Award. Closing date for
submission is 17 April 2010. The winning works and selected entries from the
competition were showcased at The 4th CDL Singapore Sculpture Award Exhibition,
held at Singapore Art Museum from 22-31 July 2009.
Winners will not
only take home cash prizes but also an opportunity to showcase their works at
the National Museum of Singapore.
