City Developments Limited: Community Outreach - Arts

Reed Sculpture, the winning work
of the inaugural CDL Singapore
Sculpture Award in 2003, was
commissioned and installed for
public display at The Pier at
Robertson along the Singapore
River.
As a material expression of society, we believe in nurturing creative expressions and cultivating talent amongst our youth, while fostering a greater appreciation for local art.

To a developer, architecture and art complement each other to create a desired expression and enhance the ambience of a property. Our long-standing support of the sculptural art form is a natural extension of our core business as a developer.

In 2002, CDL initiated and organised the CDL Singapore Sculpture Award to nurture artistic talent and to cultivate a greater appreciation for the sculptural art form in Singapore. Held biennially, the Award also aims to enrich Singapore’s sculptural landscape, through the commissioning and installation of the winning sculpture for display. The Award’s Organising Committee comprises the National Parks Board, National Heritage Board, National Arts Council, LASALLE College of the Arts and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Singapore Art Museum is the Venue Sponsor for the Award Exhibition.

Apart from sculpture, photography is another art form that CDL has been promoting amongst the youth. In 2006, CDL initiated the Singapore Young Photographer Award in partnership with five major photo clubs, the Singapore Art Museum and National Youth Achievement Award Council, to nurture young local photography talents. Besides managing this national-level initiative to promote photography amongst youths, CDL also introduced a sub-category award, "CDL Young Architectural Photographer Award" that aims to identify and
groom young talents specialising in architectural photography, which complements our core
business.

City Developments Limited: Community Outreach - Arts - 2012 13 Steps

Organised as part of Esplanade's 10th Anniversary, the 13 Steps Visual Arts Programme is a collaborative initiative that allows the public to vote for their choice of visual art to be displayed at Esplanade's Concourse Steps. The initiative is supported by CDL, which has been promoting the sculptural art form in Singapore through its biennial CDL Singapore Sculpture Award since 2003.

Located at the heart of Singapore's iconic arts venue, Esplanade's Concourse Steps (13 steps in all) have become a familiar spot for the community to enjoy commissioned public artworks by local, regional and international artists over the years. For the first time, through 13 Steps, the community is invited to be a part of the commissioning process - by voting for their favourite proposal out of four shortlisted proposals by local artists Han Sai Por, Chua Boon Kee, Sai Hua Kuan and Tang Ling Nah. The work that garners the highest number of votes will be commissioned and displayed at the Concourse Steps from October to December 2012. Voting opens on 12 January and closes on 15 April 2012. During this period, the public can view the maquettes of the artists' proposal, which will be displayed at Esplanade's Concourse Steps, and vote on-site. For more details on the proposals and to vote online, visit the 13 Steps microsite, or view the 13 Steps press statement.
