Live Green at Home
 
 
The conservation of the environment begins at home. Cultivate green habits at home for a healthier living environment.


Water

In the Bathroom
Turn off the shower while soaping.
Take quick showers.
Use a tumbler while brushing your teeth or shaving
Use a half flush for flushing of liquid waste.
Install water-efficient toilet bowls with a low capacity flushing cistern which uses only 3.5 litres to 4.5 litres per flush.
 

In the Kitchen
Wash dishes in a sink of water.
If you are using a dishwasher, wash with a full load.
Thaw frozen food in a basin of water instead of under running water.
Wash clothes in a wash-tub instead of under a running tap.
Reuse the rinse water from your washing machine to mop or wash floors and wash toilets.
 

Other Areas
Wash your floors using a mop and bucket instead of a hose.
Wash your car using a pail of water instead of a running hose.
Turn off taps tightly to stop drips.
Check your pipes and water fittings regularly for leaks.
Water your plants with a watering can instead of a running hose.
Read your water meter regularly to monitor your water consumption. Repair leaks immediately.
Install constant flow regulators on your taps and fittings.
 


Waste


Minimise the use of disposable items such as disposable crockery, non-rechargeable batteries, etc.
Pack breakfast or lunch in a washable container instead of a disposable one.
Bring your own shopping bag when shopping for groceries.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
 


Energy


Switch off lights and electronic appliances when not in use.
Use one strong bulb instead of several low-wattage ones.
Use the fan instead of air-conditioning if possible.
 
 
 

Turn your workplace into an Eco-Office!
 
 
Do something good for the environment at the workplace. Everyone can contribute to energy and resource efficiency.


Paper


Recycle used paper.
Ask your contractor about recycling confidential paper waste.
Purchase paper containing post-consumer waste or paper made from alternative fibres.
Purchase paper with an accredited environmental or green label.
Scan and e-mail reports rather than faxing them
Avoid using fax cover sheets.
Compile an e-mail listing to distribute e-versions of your reports.
File documents in soft copies instead of printing them for filing.
 


Energy


Switch off all lights, computers, copiers and other non-essential equipment when not in use.
Enable energy-saving features on all computers and copiers.
Turn off monitors when not using for more than 30 minutes.
Turn off personal computers if not in use for two hours or more.
Install occupancy sensors that turn off lights if the room is empty.
Adjust your air-conditioner settings when you feel cold.
Inkjet or dot-matrix printers use less energy than laser printers.
 


Water


Save water in toilets – use a half-flush instead of a full-flush where possible and don’t leave the tap running when washing hands.
Install water-saving devices in toilet and pantry faucets.
Use environmentally-friendly products for cleaning.
 


Indoor Air Quality


Choose untreated, natural carpeting and flooring.
Avoid glue and paint that emit volatile chemicals in the office.
Have lots of plants in the office, especially those that remove toxins and purify the air.
Plants also absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen.
Put printers and copiers in a separate room from staff. Ensure this room is well ventilated.
 


  Print Cartridges


When considering a new photocopier, choose one that uses refillable toner cartridges and bottles.
Exchange your old toner cartridges for a reconditioned one.
Buy remanufactured or refillable cartridges for photocopiers and printers.
Wash clothes in a wash-tub instead of under a running tap.
If your printouts are fading, redistribute the toner within the cartridge by pulling the cartridge out and shaking gently before replacing.
 


Waste


Avoid packaging, buy in bulk.
Select items that come in recycled or recyclable packaging.
Opt for reusable cups and containers.
Refuse plastic bags, bring your own bag when buying office supplies.
Bring your own cutlery set for use instead of disposable cutlery for your takeaways.
Install water-saving devices in toilet and pantry faucets.
Use environmentally-friendly products for cleaning.
 


Transport


Take public transport instead of driving to work. This reduces traffic congestion, air pollution and the search and paying for parking.
Start car-pooling – talk to your neighbours and colleagues.
Opt for reusable cups and containers.
Don’t buy a bigger car or engine size than necessary.
Choose a fuel-efficient car and use it efficiently, e.g. avoid high speeds, rapid acceleration and harsh braking.
Provide bicycle racks and showers for staff who cycle or walk to work.
Use environmentally-friendly products for cleaning.
