THE 6TH CDL

SINGAPORE

SCULPTURE AWARD

You're invited to create an iconic sculpture that draws inspiration from the concept of a Circular Economy and Singapore's vision of becoming a zero waste nation by 2030, for the designated sculpture site at the Singapore Sustainability Academy.

Submission deadline: 21 April 2017

THEME

Based on the theme Towards Zero-Waste!, the sculpture should draw inspiration from the concept of a Circular Economy and Singapore’s vision of becoming a zero waste nation by 2030. Singapore faces unique challenges in waste management, given our land scarcity and the increasing amount of waste generated each year.

In 2015, Singapore generated about 7.5 million tonnes of waste, which is 50 per cent more than what was generated 10 years ago. If we continue at this rate, Semakau Landfill, Singapore’s only landfill will run out of space by 2035.

Through the theme of this year’s Sculpture Award, CDL hopes to shift mindsets and change behavior from  a linear “take-make-dispose” model to a more circular one, in which resources are circulated back into the economy and used for as long as possible.

THE SITE

The sculpture will be located at the Singapore Sustainability Academy (SSA), on the roof terrace of CDL’s City Square Mall, Singapore’s first eco-mall. The Academy is due to open around mid-2017.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The sculpture design should encapsulate the spirit of sustainability and the essence of a circular, zero-waste economy.

SIZE

The sculpture should not exceed 2.5m in height (inclusive of the pedestal or base, if proposed) within a space of 2 x 2 m in area.

MATERIAL

As the sculpture will be placed outdoors and in the public domain, participants must address issues regarding maintenance, durability, corrosion, public safety and vandalism in their choice of materials.

The sculpture should be designed as a permanent structure and is required to meet an expected life span of more than 20 years. It should be designed with low maintenance in mind.
