Singapore, 19 November 2023 - CDL hosted its 5-Star Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Sports Challenge and Awards Ceremony on Sunday, 19 November 2023, at the SUTD Sports and Recreation Centre. The annual event, a staple in CDL's commitment to promoting workplace safety, brought together about 200 industry leaders, workers, and partners to celebrate and reinforce their dedication to health and safety in the construction sector.

Gracing the event was Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Minister of State for Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of National Development, who congratulated CDL on its 60th Anniversary and acknowledged the efforts put into the EHS Sports Challenge. He highlighted the pivotal role of safety in the industry's ongoing transformation and emphasised the importance of harnessing technological advancements and collaboration to enhance safety measures across the construction sector.

“Sports events, like today’s, are wonderful opportunities for workers to put all their differences aside and get to know each other and strengthen trust. Just like how we look out for our teammates when playing sports, better communication between project stakeholders and workers on the ground can help to pre-empt issues before they arise. This can translate into better outcomes on-site too. Transforming the sector towards greater safety will be an on-going effort and require all hands-on-deck. I look forward to working with you to create a safer workplace for all,” he said.

CDL Group General Manager Mr Chia Ngiang Hong also addressed the group, emphasising the significance of the event in fostering camaraderie and raising awareness of workplace health and safety among the workers. He highlighted the challenges faced by the construction industry in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, urging contractors to continue efforts in improving site safety culture. He also expressed gratitude to partners, such as the Migrant Workers' Centre (MWC) and Singtel, for supporting the event and promoting EHS awareness.

As part of the event, nine awards were given out to recognise outstanding contributions to safety. They include the Safe Worker Award, CDL EHS 5-Star Excellence Award and the CDL EHS Welfare Award. Following a series of exciting matches across five different games, United Tec Construction Pte Ltd emerged as the champions. The 1st and 2nd Runner Up positions were secured by two teams from Woh Hup Pte Ltd, with Dragages Singapore Pte Ltd earning the consolation prize.

Concluding on a high note, the event saw all stakeholders renewing their commitment to prioritise safety in the construction industry.
